We, here at HoH, want the character creation process to be a fun process. We want it to be an experience that allows you to really create the Harry Potter character that you've always wanted to be! And, now that you have read this, you have all the necessary information to make the experience 10 times better! If you follow each one of these rules, then there should be no reason why there should be a problem with your profile! Although, please see the format in which character profiles should be posted. So, create and conquer! If you have any questions about any information presented within, please contact the Headmaster.
What are the requirements for becoming an offical student at HoH?
- There are a few steps for becoming a student at HNC. The first thing is you have to become a member of the forum! You can do that by clicking the "Register" button at the top of the screen just below the big "Halls of Hogwarts" image. The second thing you must do is activate your account. If you do not do this, you cannot participate on the forums. The third thing you need to do is get sorted. You cannot complete your character profile until you have been sorted and know which house you belong to. There is a question that asks about which house you are in. The final thing that makes you an official Hogwarts student is your character profile. This is a Role Playing Game. This means that you get to be someone totally different when you are on this forum. This profile is basically something that puts your character's life in a nut shell. All four of these things are needed to become an official HoH student.
I want to become a professor at HNC. What must I do then?
- In order to become a staff member, you must complete the first two steps listed above: register for the forum and activate your account. However, staff members can't be sorted. That is for student's only. If you have been sorted and then decide that you want to be a professor instead, then you will have to wait until you graduate from Hogwarts. If you have not been sorted and want to become a staff member, simply go the board called "Applications" and find the thread on Professor Applications. There are instructions on what to do and information on which positions are still available. I encourage anyone who wants to become a professor to fill out an application and try for one of the spots.
I have received a message from a staff member that there is something off with my character's biography. What should I do?
- If you receive a message from a staff member about your character's biography (or any other part of your character profile), either kindly respond to the person who notified you or, if you don't feel comfortable responding back to that person, talk to the Headmaster about it. Character biographies are looked at in terms of the timeline (present day, which means the year in Hogwarts time is the year in real-time.), among other things. For example, if your biography is all about what happened way back during the Marauder's era, then you will be contacted about that.
Does my character profile have to approved by anyone?
- No. We do not require profiles to be approved. All profiles are automatically approved. If we find something that should be fixed, we will contact you and work with you until it is just right. However, if your character profile is completely "off the wall", we will probably send you a kind message saying something along the lines of "Try again!". We want players who are serious and active members of this community.
What kind of information should I put in my profile?
- We require the basics: Character's Name, House (Staff members put N/A unless a Head of House), Blood Status, Age, Year (1st by default), Pet (if you have one), and Wand (required by Ministry law), physical description, and biography. You are welcome to add things such as interests, favorites books, etc, in the "Additional Information" section of the form. Your character is yours to create, so don't hold back!
Does my character have to be a certain race?
- Of course not! We allow members of all races and ethnicities to play here at HNC. Whether you are Hispanic, Caucasian, or African-American, everyone is welcome to join the fun!
Can my character pursue relationships with character's of the opposite gender?
If it is a "just friends" relationship, there is no problem there. However, if you're looking to pursue a "boyfriend/girlfriend" type of relationship, then there are some guidelines. First off, remember that this is a G-rated site. If you're going to pursue a relationship like this, you need to be sure not to have any kind of sexually explicit material. Use the books as guidelines on what material is considered sexually explicit.
Which bloodtype should my character be?
- You may choose any of the three bloodtypes. Just keep in mind the relationships of bloodtypes and the story. For example, a Muggle born student would probably not be put in Slytherin. Although HoH is a 21st century version of Hogwarts, there are still things that hold true. It is recommended to choose your blood type after you have been sorted. FYI: the three blood types are Muggle born (born to two non-magic parents), Half blood (born to one Muggle parent and one magic parent), and Pureblood (born to two magic parents).
Are canon characters allowed?
- Canon characters are NOT allowed. In case you are wondering, a canon character is a character that is based on a character from the series. For example, your character cannot be named Draco Malfoy. That is a canon character. Considering that HoH takes at least twelve years after the Deathly Hallows, it is a safe bet that many of the characters that we cherish from the series are getting on in years and probably won't be returning to Hogwarts anytime soon. No, family relations are not allowed. You cannot be a direct relation to Professor Snape. No, characters from the books cannot be your best friends at Hogwarts. Think about it. It is 12 years after they have all graduated. That would make them all at least 29 years old, old enough to be parents. Unless there is some kind of Family Day at Hogwarts, they probably won't be coming back either. In summary, NO canon characters of ANY KIND!
Are there any kinds of names that I should avoid?
- Yes there are, as a matter of fact! While we do enjoy encouraging members to create unique names for their character, we do believe in setting limits. First, no hyphenated names (Joy-Anna, Jordyn-Grace). Second, unless it is a last name, no colors in your name. Third, do not overcomplicate the spelling of your character's name (i.e. Kahrolyine (Caroline) or Jayhcuhb (Jacob)).
Am I allowed to be any other kind of magical species?
- * No. We are wanting only human witches and wizards at the moment. This is not to say that we won't in the future. This includes, but is not limited to, veela, leprechaun, werewolf, and vampire.
