James walked into the classroom and looked at the faces of his Arithmancy class. James loves teaching this young age group. One of his teaching philosophies has always been that it is best to start with the youngest group of students. He always looked forward to meeting the students of his new classes. After doing a quick roll call for attendance, he turned to the board and waved his wand.
Suddenly, the chalk rose to life and begin writing itself on the black chalkboard. It said:
As the chalk was writing, he stood behind his lectern. "Good day students, welcome to Arithmancy and Numerology. I am Professor James Coppergold. Of course, many of you know as me as the Headmaster. However, this term I will be your Arithmancy professor as well!" he said, attempting to make eye contact with every student in the room. "Now, this course studies the use of numbers and your futures! Today, we will be starting with the basics. We will see how our names are affected by numerology.
James looked back at the students has they all looked up at him in admiration as he began the lesson.
"Now, in numerology, we use the numbers one through nine (1-9). Also, each number has a special significant meaning, as listed below:
Each of these numbers represents a quality that you possess. So, let's learn how these numbers apply to our name. we will using this chart for a great part of the course:
You will notice letter is assigned a number 1-9. Today, we are going to learn how to calculate the numerologic meaning of a name. Let's use my name for instance:
By taking each letter and replacing it with the assigned number from the chart above, I get the following:
From here, I add all of these numbers up:
This adds up to: 69. I have arrived at this number by adding up the digits of my name.
Now, I want to get this number to a single digit. Therefore, I add the digits of 69:
This number is still not a single digit. I must reduce it further by adding the digits of 15, one and five, together:
This number is now a single digit, 6. Because I have derived the 6 from my name, James Coppergold. I can now say that my name represents "love, balance, and harmony."
So, let's examine why I have been defined to have love, balance, and harmony. Perhaps, as a Headmaster, I enjoy seeing students and teachers co-existing well. I also enjoy seeing the love that the Hogwarts students have for learning these various types of magic. Also, perhaps I enjoy seeing balance between our magic world and the Muggle world. Possessing the qualities of love and balance are important for a Headmaster because they enable him to serve his students better.
So, here is your assignment for the week:
Next week, we will be studying name evaluations more in-depth. If you have any questions regarding the lesson, please send me an owl or post them in my office.
At the end of the lecture, James looked at the students who were excitedly copying down each part of the example he had given them, as well as the assignment. "When you are finished copying the examples and the assignment, you are free to go."
Students slowly filed out of the room as they finished copying what was on the board. As the students slowly trickled out of the room, he said quietly to himself, "Well done!"

By taking each letter and replacing it with the assigned number from the chart above, I get the following:
1-1-4-5-1 3-6-7-7-5-9-7-6-3-4
From here, I add all of these numbers up:
1+1+4+5+1 3+6+7+7+5+9+7+6+3+4
This adds up to: 69. I have arrived at this number by adding up the digits of my name.
Now, I want to get this number to a single digit. Therefore, I add the digits of 69:
69 --> 6 + 9 = 15
This number is still not a single digit. I must reduce it further by adding the digits of 15, one and five, together:
15 --> 1 + 5 = 6
This number is now a single digit, 6. Because I have derived the 6 from my name, James Coppergold. I can now say that my name represents "love, balance, and harmony."
