Ceta walked through the door of the owlery and looked around as moonlight seaped through the windows, she hadn't realised how late it was but she had to send a message home to her parents - for the first time she was feeling somewhat homesick.
She looked around at the owls, they were such beautiful creatures and she was hoping that someday soon she would be able to have one of her own.
'Perhaps I could add that request into my letter?' She thought to herself.
Finding somewhere to perch, she took out her parchment paper and quill which she still had left on her due to just leaving the library.
A few sweeping movements on the paper and she was finished, she rolled up the letter again and peered at the owls to find the appropriate one.
'You'll do' she smiled at the owl of brilliant white.
Taking a little treat out of her robe pocket, she held the tasty morcel out to the owl and he took it gently from her fingers.
She carefully went to stroke the owl's head, going slow as to make sure not to startle it and get bitten. The owl having liked the treat accepted her advancements and let her stroke his head.
After she felt she had made good friends with this owl, she held out the parchment and said 'please take this to Arwenya and John Nightingale'.
The owl took it gracefully into his claw, before swooping out of the window with a screech into the nights air.
"Good luck little owl" called Ceta after it.
The letter:
Dear Mum and Dad,
How is everything at home? Is sissy still upset about me going to Hogwarts or is she enjoying her new school back in Great Thirkleby?
Everything is fine here, I am a proud Gryffindor mother - just like you were and I am loving my classes so far (got an Oustanding in Potions - although I fear the assignments are only going to get harder!)
Oh Dad, you should see this Castle, it is amazing! I have been trying to do some exploring, but there is plenty more that I am leaving for a rainy day when I'm bored.
I have met some new people, a fellow Gryffindor by the name of Duncan Mowbray, two Hufflepuff students named Galagron Smokestone and Katie Carter and of course you will be pleased to know Jessi got into Gryffindor too so we have been having fun!
Well aside from all that, a weekend in Hogsmeade is coming up soon - wish me luck.
Your doting daughter
Ceta
Ps... I really would like my own owl to send you letters
