It was the second class and therefore the second chance for someone to be horribly maimed, burned or otherwise. Last chance they had been lucky. No one had gotten too horrible injured, at least not physically. Professor Brayden Mellor didn't much care if the students in the previous class were mentally scarred. It wasn't his fault that they couldn't deal with a little educational prodding. Rather than sitting in the chair behind his desk as he normally did, the professor moved out to the hallway and stood at his door. The purpose of this was to make his students a little on edge about dawdling outside the classroom. The professor was not at all a fan of wasted time.
When it was time for class to begin, he let the last of the stragglers in through the door and then closed it, but not locking it, behind him. Any late comers would therefore make themselves known as they pushed open the heavy and squeaky, wooden doors. Walking to the front of the class he marked the start of class by a clearing of his throat and writing on the board: Turning back to his students, he spoke.
"Most of you have already heard my little speech about the importance of following directions in this class. And so, I do not plan on repeating myself. Today's potions is the forgetfulness potion. And before you go off thinking that this is not a serious potion, let me remind you that even the simplest potion done incorrectly can have the most serious of consequences. So pay attention to the directions! What this potion does is to make the drinker forget everything they have done in the past two days and is often used when an obliviation spell doesn't fully work on Muggles. There are, of course, more potent potions that have been known to erase years and even decades from a person's memory. That having been said, no one in this classroom is to drink the potion.
"Now, please turn to page eighteen in your textbook and begin. The supplies you need are lying on the tables in front of each of you as before. I'll be coming around for questions and to keep an eye on you all. You are not excused until I've taken a look at your potion. And you'll find that your cauldrons have already been filled to the needed amount of water. Now commence!"

Laelia had entered the class room on time, determined to do much better on this week's potion. She listened to the Professor's little speech on following instructions nodding her head in between.
Turning to page eighteen of her textbook, she read the directions of her potions again and again till she had it memorized. Since it was a little more complicated than last week's boil cure potion, she decided to measure and arrange the ingredients. She took her time doing it carefully. Each ingredient was measured properly. She arranged them in order, first to last, in use.
She finally lit the fire beneath her water filled cauldron. She followed the steps exactly, put the proper amount of the ingredients at the right timings. She gave a small sigh of relief at the end, when color of the potion resembled a chocolate milkshake.
She carefully ladled it into the bottle, and awaited Professor Mellor's approach.

Duncan had been easily on time for class and nodded to the professor as he entered. He went striaght to the front row seat that he had claimed as 'his' seat and got out his gear and arranged it carefully.
He paid attention to the professors lecture and, when instructed, opened his book and read the directions. He read them a second and a third time to be sure that he had a good mental plan on how to proceed.
Since ingredients needed to go into the mixture as it warmed Duncan knew that the ingredients needed to be prepared first. As he prepped the ingredeints, carefully cutting and measuring to get everything exact, he put them in stacks of order of first to last. Because the 3.5g chopped daisy stems and 7 black beetle eyes were to at the same time, he put them in a pile together.
When the ingredients were ready, he carefully was ready to start the fire.
Duncan raised his hand "Sir, I believe that the directions are somewhat vague sir. When it says 'begins to warm' is that a) is no longer chilly, b) when the water has become warmer than room temperature, c) when the water begins to feel like a warm bath or d) some other answer ? I ask, sir, because you made the excellent point regarding need for accuracy, sir."

It was Mists' first lesson, and was intending to make an impression on the Professor. Hopefully, she'd succeed. She opened her textbook and started.
Warming it up, Mist decided it was warm enough and added the '3.5 daisy stems and 7 black beetle eyes'. At the same time, of course. She then began stirring it. When the sliced catterpillars had been added, been stirred for 5 minutes and the cauldren had been taken off the fire, Mist sturggeled to remember how long to let the potion to cool for, so she consulted her textbook. 'Ten minutes,' the book told her. When the ten minutes were up, she slowly added 2.0mL essence of belladonna while stirring her potion. After two minutes, it appeared thick and looked like chocolate milkshake. A sprig of peppermint was added and stirred for one minute. She carefully put the potion into the bottle and put the stopper on. Happily, Mist smiled. 'Smells disgusting,' Mist thought to herself as she waited Professor Mellors' grading on her potion, 'wouldn't like to be on the recieving end of that.' Although the smell, it looked lovely, like a thick chocolate milkshake. 'Would be classed as "off" in the muggle world,' she thought, peering at someone elses' potion. She started clearing away, thinking, 'Hrm. More fun than I expected,' because, in truth, she'd been nervous about it all because of the teacher.

Ceta was quite nervous about today's potions class, after all the potions were only going to get harder and after she had found a seat and heard the Professors lecture this just confirmed her belief.
As she read the extract from the potions book, she took a deep breath, rolled the sleeves of her robe up and tucked her hair behind her ears. Today she meant business, today she was going to make sure she kept up the grades she had been getting and she wasn't going to let some potion defeat her.
She peered around at the other students all seemingly under way with their potions, and she giggled a little at Duncans question - not that she thought it was a bad question as she needed to clarify this issue as well. But the way he asked it almost sounded like he was sucking up to the Professor, however she imagined everyone in Hogwarts including herself had done this on more than one occasion before.
So finally concentrating on what she was doing she began arranging her ingredients and lighting a fire under the couldron. It wasn't long before she saw the golden flames licking at the bottom of the pot in hunger, and the water beginning to steam as it warmed up.
This was the right time to add the ingredients, and she read on only to find this warning which sent shivers of anxiety through her body "CAUTION: if more than 30 seconds goes by between the two added ingredients the potion may turn bright purple and float from the cauldron, causing severe burns to anyone it comes into contact."
Ceta quickly measured the right amount of ingredients and added them to the water at the same time, watching the daisy stems and 7 beetle eyes floating on the surface. She let it sit, stirring as the recipe said at one minute increments until boiling.
After it boiled Ceta added the two sliced caterpillas using the tongs, she almost squealed when there was a hiss and the steam arose as she dropped each one in. She could feel the warmth of the steam against her skin and face as she peered over the cauldron while stirring vigourously for 5 minutes.
The potion was now coming together, and after the 5 minutes all that was left to do was to take the cauldron off of the fire and let it cool. Once it had cooled for 10 mins Ceta stirred the liquid and added 2.0mL essence of belladonna, stirring consistently for 2 minutes straight.
The potion was now looking like a delicious chocolate milkshake, almost good enough to drink. But when she smelt it, it didn't smell like a delicious milkshake and she realized how disgusting it would be to drink this liquid that had beetle eyes in it!
She figured the potion looked thick enough, and the next step clearly said 'if potion does not look thick' - so she skipped this step. Finally she added the sprig of peppermint and stirred forone more minute - boy there was alot of stirring in this recipe and her armwas beginning to ache.
It was done, her masterpiece was finished.
'Not bad' she thought to herself as she ladled the thick dark liquid into a bottle and added the stopper.
She awaited the Professors approval while cleaning up her equipment....

KAtie stopped in the hall, still early, and took a few deep breathes. 'OK girl' she thought 'potions is just like katas - the right steps in the right order - you are just learning different katas'.
She walked in with a confident stride and sat across from Duncan. She gave him a thumbs up and got out her gear.
She paid attention to professor Mellor just like she would pay attention to her master at the dojo. She smiled as it seemed so much easier with the right mental attitude.
She prepared the ingredients and measured them then put them in piles and remeasured or recounted each pile to be sure she had the right amounts. As soon as she started her fire she noticed that Duncan asked a question.
She decided to wait about a minute for an answer and if the answer didn't come by then she figured that her water would be warming enough to continue.

Oliver slunk in to Potions again. He wasn't late this time, but he definately wasn't early either. There were barely any spare seats, except for one near a Slytherin girl, while blond hair. Oliver sat down next to her and took out his notebook, which was covered in Quidditch doodles.
As the Professor began to speak, Oliver noticed that he was rather close to the front. He looked over at the girl from Slytherin and recognized her as Laelia Lule from the student lounge. She was paying very close attention to the Professor. Oliver wrote down the notes to the potion and then started to prep his ingrediants.
Oliver knew his accuracy with the ingrediants wasn't very clear, they were chopped a little unevenly, but he still tried his best. He wasn't sure if he had cut up enough daisy stems, so he added a little more of those. While he waited for his cauldron to warm up, he looked over at Laelia's cauldron.
Her's seemed to be perfect. It was almost done and Oliver couldn't see how she had done that so quickly. It had taken him forever to prep his ingrediants. Oliver ignored Duncan's question and added the ingrediants when his notes told him. He had just started stirring vigorously after adding the sliced caterpillars. Unfortunately he must have added just a little too much daisy stems, because the caterpillars didn't really sizzle when they went in. Oliver didn't think anything of this and he continued on.
Once Oliver had finished the instructions he looked down at his potion, which was now dark brown. It didn't really look like a chocolate milkshake and it definately wasn't thickening up, he didn't know what he had done.
"Hey Laelia," Oliver said, leaning over. "What is it supposed to look like?" He was getting a little panicky.

Alice entered the 2nd class of potions and once again the professor was testing the ljm its of the students. Alice wasn't the best at potions, but she wanted to prove her knowledge as a ravenclaw so she opned her book to the directed page and made sure she had all the proper ammount and ingrdeinents. Alice put some timber underneath the caouldren and light it with some flint she had to make a more muggleish fire than a wizard magic fire. As the water came to a nice arm even temperature Alcie quickly added the 3.5g of chopped daisy sems and the 7 black bettle eyes making sure they were not added outside the 30 second limit. She awaited every minute and stirred accorinutly as the directions said and went on with the next step.
Alice then grabbed the tongs as the water caem to a boil and added the 2 sliced caterpillers where they released some steam from the couldren. Alcie then stired as directed again for 5 mins then taking the couldren off the fire she let it cool for 10 mins while extinguishing her flame with some water. After the 10 mins she she added the 2 ml essence of belladonna to the caouldren stiring once again which turned the potion into a chocalate brown color and felt a bit thick for a potion. Alice then cunfronted her book which said this was to suppose to happen and she just needed to add 11 mL of flobberworm mucus which made they potion more thin and easier to ladle. Alice then added a sprig of pepperment and stired for 1 more minute and laddled her potion into an empty bottle she had and closed the top and awaited for the professor to pick up her sample.

OOC: Professor Mellor sent a personal message to me and said that he was having issues with his computer and hasn't been able to get on. He also gave me an answer to my question. The following post is WITH explicit permission of Prof Mellor.
IC: The professor smiled at young mister Mowbray, a subtle smile that you would have to look closely to notice. "Excellent observation Mister Mowbray. The instructions are, in fact, vague. The water needs to have heated to about room temperature before he ingredients start to be added."
"Thank you sir." Dunacn replied. Duncan scorgified his hands to be sure that nothing unexpected would be in his potion if he tested the water with his finger. He checked the water and the thirs time the water felt warm enough.
He added the 3.5g chopped daisy stems and 7 black beetle eyes at the same time. As the potions came to a boil, he dropped in the 2 sliced caterpillars using the provided tongs. The potions will released hot steam as each piece hits its surface. He stir vigourously for 5 minutes.
Then Duncan took the cauldron off the fire and placed it on a suitable surface to cool for 10 minutes. When 10 minutes passed ,he slowly add 2.0mL essence of belladonna while stirring. He stirred for 2 minutes and the potion appearred thick and resembled the colour of a chocolate milkshake.
With the potion proceeding as it should, Duncan added a sprig of peppermint to the potion and stirred for 1 minute. No changes occured at this step.
He carefully ladle potion into bottle and place stopper in the top, satisfied that the potion was complete.

And it didn't take a minute for Duncan to get his answer so the water was just right for Katie. She nodded and followed the directions carefully, step by step, just like she did her katas.
When she was done in was the perfect shade of chocolate milk shake. She bottled it and waited for the professor.
